The Association for Library Service to Children awards the Caldecott Medal each year to a deserving picture book and names runner-ups (Honor) as well.
According to the ALSC website, "The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children."
2011 Caldecott Medal winner is A Sick Day for Amos McGee, illustrated by Erin E. Stead, written by Philip C. Stead. Click here for our Sweet on Books review of this very deserving title!
The Caldecott Honor books are: Dave the Potter: Artist, Poet, Slave, illustrated by Bryan Collier, written by Laban Carrick Hill; Interrupting Chicken, written and illustrated by David Ezra Stein.
The Geisel Award is in honor of the children's author and illustrator, Theodor Seuss Geisel, It is awarded to the author and illustrator of the best beginner reader books published in the US in English.

The 2011 Geisel Medal winner is Bink and Gollie, written by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGee, illustrated by Tony Fucile.
The Geisel Honor books are: Ling & Ting: Not Exactly the Same!, written and illustrated by Grace Lin; We Are in a Book!, written and illustrated by Mo Willems.
"The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children," according to the ALSC website.

The 2011 Newbery Medal winner is Moon over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool.
The 2011 Newbery Honor books are: Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer L. Holm, Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus, Dark Emperor and Other Poems of the Night by Joyce Sidman, and One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia.
